Rob Matthews was born in Wilson, North Carolina in 1974. In 1999, he received his MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University. Matthews works primarily with graphite on paper, and has had several solo exhibitions of his drawings in Philadelphia, Virginia and Tennessee. He has participated in a variety of group exhibitions and art fairs over the past several years, including the ArtBasel Miami satellite fair Aqua in 2005, and Scope Art Fair (New York) in 2003. In addition to the numerous solo and group exhibitions, in 2005 Matthews was awarded a coveted slot in the arts publication New American Paintings (Issue 57).
The themes Matthews explores in his work focus on moments of transcendence beyond physical existence, such as spontaneous human combustion, sleepwalking, or dreaming. He embraces these concepts for their ability to evade being disproved. Faith is at the heart of his work. Further, his drawings range in genre from film noir to Southern gothic literature, but share a common thread of black comedy.
