Pawel Kupiec was born in Bialystok, Poland and later immigrated to the United States in 1994. He graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004, with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions in the Chicago area, as well as a solo show at Northeastern University in 2003.

Kupiec is concerned with the physicality of his materials. “…the surface is always scarred; suggesting previous use but also obscuring the image and making the viewer look ‘inside’.” He also is interested in the depiction of drapery, both in its own rite and in his portraits, mindful of the long tradition of drapery in the history of art. “I consider it connected with the human body because of the patterns it forms. Together with the human body it speaks of the coincidental beauty of natural design not found in any man-made object.”
